Do these require a major breaking in time? I got a pair of Burton

Burton Ultrastrap Air

Do these require a major breaking in time? I got a pair of Burton Escapade bindings which came with these straps. When the bindings came, these straps were stuffed in the back of the bindings and were bent (not curved). I took them out for a day of riding today, and the straps really squeezed both sides of my feet, so badly, that I could not ride the lift anymore after a few hours. Are what I got defective, or the straps require a few days of breaking in time?

I have size 13 boots and would love to try riding on a normal width board and would be very curious to hear from people who have ridden them. Are you better off utilizing risers, or just getting a wider board?
