I love to ski the groomers fast, because that's usually what's there, but enjoy powder when I get it. I Ski Summit county CO mostly, enjoy A-BAsin alot. I am currently skiing K2 Mod-X Pro skis, in 195 cm length. These skis have a 70 cm waist. My questions are: 1. Why have skis become wider? 2. What would I gain by going to a current shorter, fatter ski, such as the Voikl AC 30 (80 cm waist) in a 185 cm length, over my aging K2s.

I want to ski in control on the groomers and the light pow and glades/bumps 80/20. I am looking at new skis for 2010, say K2 Recons or Sidewinders or mayby Volkl AC30s or Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous. Any suggestions appreciated.

Volkl Unlimited AC50 Alpine Ski w/ Motion iPT Wide Ride 14.0 Binding

How do these compare to the Mantra? I just got back from two days at Keystone. I demoed a pair of Mantra 184's. Snow was hard with ice. The Mantras were fast (hit 55.6 MPH on the GPS :)) on the steep groomers but tended to skid and slide a bit. The rental boots were only a 50 stiffness which probably contributed alot to the lack of solid control. I want something that will hold a turn a little harder. I have been skiing for almost 40 years but this was my first time in nine years. (No excuse. I know.) I am 50, 6'1", 225 lbs expert. ThanksMark
